  1. During the rising of '98 the Blacksmiths were very important because they forged the pikes with which the Wexford men fought.
    At the South of a little village called Carnew there lived a very important man named Mr OConnor Mr OConnor was a blacksmith and his forge was a meeting place for the rebels that lived in Carnew. A man in the neighbourhood who had been spying on him told the English that he was forging the pikes for the rebels. He was captured and cast into prison. He was flogged severly, they had a right and a left handed man to flog him, when they had finished flogging him in many
