- Leghorn Hats - 28th April 1938Leghorn hats were made as follows, "Trawneens" these were long coarse piece of grass were picked and put in a 'shore' with just enough water to cover them. They were left there for an hour or so and then put in a sunny place to bleach. They were treated in this manner until they became white. The pieces of grass were then taken one by one and split in halves with a splitter. A number of plaits were made, five or six in each plait. These plaits were tied in bundes and sold to the women and they made them into hats. The plaits were sometimes sent to Waterford.
