  1. Mushrooms
    To know if mushrooms are good or safe to use - Put in a piece of silver while they are being cooked and if it turns black they are poisonous.

    Eggs
    To test for staleness. "melt down" or dissolve 2ozs salt in one pint of water. Fresh laid eggs will descend to bottom
    Stale eggs will rise in proportion to freshness or staleness.
    Sugar
    To test for impurities .
    Burn a little in a spoon
    Pure sugar burns entirely away.
    If impure, some ash will remain.
