- Candles were used for light, the candles were made of rushes.
[My mother Mrs Leacy (- 40 yrs - ) told me this]Brigid Lacy
Monamolin, Gorey, Co Wexford. - The houses in olden times were built with mud walls mixed with straw and roofed with timber & lined wth sods usually called scraws (or rushes) & then thatched with straw or rushes.
Some chimneys were made with boards. Some of the houses had holes for windows called peep-holes.
The fire was flat on the hearth and paved all around with small stones.
The light used at night was a twisted rush steeped in tallow or grease. My father Mr Kehoe (50 yrs) told me this.Eileen Kehoe
