   There was an old school in Gurteen some years ago. A man named Pat Dunne was teaching in it.
   He was not a native of the place but he used to come in the morning and teach until four o'clock. They were taught English writing Arithmetic and Christian Doctrine. They wrote with pencils and they had exercises that the teacher gave them and they used to bring a penny for them. The teacher charged the children four pence a week. Then he left that place and he taught in some old houses that people had left. He taught there for four years. Then he went to America. There was another old school in Rossard. The teacher's name was Annie Kearns. She taught in the old houses that people had left. There was a table and forms in one house where she was teaching and the children sat on them. They wrote with slates and pencils.
