   On St. Stephen's Day :boys decorate a holly bush with ribbons and go around from house to house, but it is not the custom in this parts, The boys sing the Wren-song which runs as this.

   On St. Stephen's day was caught in
   the furze.

   Rise up landlady and give us a
   treat.

   pan.

   on.

   put you in the grave.
   We followed the wren the livelong
   day,
   Through dirty mud and yellow clay,
   We hushed her up aand we hushed
   her down.
   and we hushed her into
   Mountmellick.
   We dipped her tail in a barrel of
   beer.

   Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday.It is an old custom to make pancakes on that night, and it is called "Pancake Night". It ends the season of Shrove, the time when most weddings take place. It is not regarded a particular time for getting married in this parish.
   Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten season.Those who can,go to mass on that morning The priest makes the Sign of the Cross with Blessed Ashes on the foreheads of each.The Ashes are got from burned Blessed Palms and blessed by the priest.
