- There were only two meals eaten in the day, the breakfast and supper. The kind of food that they took for the breakfast was a feed of porridge and butter-milk. Sometimes they had black bread and tea.
Before they got their breakfast they had to do three or four hours' work. On Ash Wednesday they would not get their breakfast until after twelve o' clock.
When they would be getting ready for bed they got a piece of cold porridge in their hands. On Sundays they got a small piece of meat or some kind of fish. The poor people never got a piece of meat on any day except Christmas-day.- Collector
