    Old Houses
All the old farmhouses round the district were mud walled. Many of these remain still, and are lived in. They are warm and comfortable and dampness is unknown. The farmers built their own houses.
Chopped straw or rushes were mixed mud and the walls were built thickly. "Scraws" or tough sods were cut from the bog and cut in lengths, which were rolled from the wooden top to eave.
Next they were thatched with straw - wheaten straw is best for this - and sewed on with hayropes or tarred cord. Then the sculbs were put in.
Many thatched farmhouses are in the district.
The smaller "cabins" have been replaced by labourers' cottages built of concrete.
