Once on a time there was a woman who used to steal the profit of people's milk.
One morning a man who was going early to a fair saw her. She was skimming water.
She used the water as cream.
The woman did not know the man was watching her. As she skimmed she said, "all this is mine". The man said "no, half of it is mine." After that the man had more butter than he could make use of, and he did not know how to get rid of it.
___It is said that if a branch of the Quicken tree is hung outside the dairy and outhouses on May-Eve and the cows are driven out with Quicken on May morning the butter will never be taken.
If a person comes to the house while the churning is going on and does not give the churn a turn he is suspected of taking the butter.Cait Ni Thuathail. (13)
