Pat Malone and the barrel.
Once upon a time there lived a man in
Newtown in the parish of Killeigh named Pat
Malone. One day he went out this his gun to
hunt. It happened that English soldiers were out
with hounds hunting also. They met him in the
field and planned to make fun of him. They got
a barrel and covered in the top of it to keep
him in it. They left him there and went off. But
when the dogs were coming back they knew there
something in the barrel. There was a hole in it
and one dog got his tail caught in it. He got
frightened and ran off dragging the barrel
with him. He never stopped running until he
reached Ballinagar and the people were
coming home from Mass. The dog lay down and
was not able to go any further and the soldiers spent the day looking for him. So if the soldiers
made fun of him Pat made fun of them.
