- There are four forges in the parish of Birr namely Gleesons forge, Buckleys forge, Delahuntys forge. Mr. Buckley has been a blacksmith for many years. The most of those forges are situated near the roadside. The door of the forge is in the shape of a horse shoe. There is one fire place inside the forge for to heat the iron. There is a bellows in the forge also to blow the fire. The bellows is not made locally. The blacksmith uses many tools at his work. He uses a hammer, a sledge, an anvil, a vice, a rasp, a tongs to hold the iron and a clench cutter to cut the shoe. The smith makes and mends every farm implement such as ploughs, harrows and pulpers. The smith also shoes asses and horses and sometimes shoes wheels in the hot weather. When the blacksmith is removing a shoe from a horse he cuts it with(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
