- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)right, while on the left, the lofty steel chimney of the Beet Factory gleams conspicuously. Away down under the hill stood the wide silvery lake - the water resevoir for Carlow town.
Here we met an old bearded man, who, to our surprise had some knowledge of Irish. After a short interview with him, he related some of the historical items in connection with these ancient ruins and their surroundings. In the fifth century the first monastery was founded by Saint Diarmuid. War and avarice took their toll, and in 1041 the oratory was completely burned to the ground, in revenge for the misdeed of Donncadh, son of Brian, and the ruins now to be seen are those of the chapel built after that date.- Bailitheoir
