  1. Bird - Lore
There are many wild birds to be found in our district, namely the pigeon, crow, thrush, blackbird, sparrow, robin, wren, yellow hammer, tit mouse, and jack-daw. Some of those birds mentioned emigrate to any foreign country.
The pigeon builds her nest on top of a larch tree, the crow also builds on top of a tree. The thrush builds her nest in the fork of a tree. The blackbird builds in a bush and sometimes in a ditch. The sparrow, yellow hammer and titmouse build their nests in house-eaves. The robin and wren build their nests in ditches. The jackdaw builds in chimneys.
The stone-chatter builds in holes in walls. The sparrow, robin, wren, yellow-hammer, and titmouse, blackbird and thrush with moss, hay, and wool, and they all lay from two to seven eggs each, except the wren, that lays 21 eggs.
They sit on the eggs for ten days. If a boy robs a swallow’s nest their cows are supposed to milk blood. The swallows come to Ireland in May.
