miles in length, and which can be seen to this day.
Michael Dwyer first came into prominence in the '98 rebellion, whn he helped to recruit rebel bands in the Co. Wicklow to aid the Wexford insurgents.
The greater part of his life was spent in alternate vigils in the mountains, and watching for spies and informers, which were often followed by desperate raids and skirmishes with the Yeomen and the Militia.
Many stories of his encounters and escapes from his enemies are told, one of which records how he escaped by hiding in a very small pigy-sty which was occupied by an enormous sow. When one of the soldiers bent down to look inside of the sty, Michael Dwyer jabbed the sow with his dagger and the huge brute got on to her feet and snorted at the Yeoman, who completely non-plussed withdrew.
Michael Dwyer was married in a ratehr romantic fashion to Mary Doyle. One day fifty horsemen, with green cockades in their hats, led by Michael Dwyer drew rein at her house, with Michael was a riderless horse.
