    men crept quietly round, until near the house. When near enough to demand the arms Hackett gave the order, but an officer who was upstairs in the building noticing what was wrong, drew a pistol and shot Hackett dead.
    Local tradition has it that he had a mere handful of men with him, and that the garrison seized him, bound him and left him out all night in snow. However the fact is that he was beheaded and his head spiked and placed on a wall of the barrack at Arklow. I was talking to an old man Patrick Delaney aged 78, who died a few years ago, and whose grandfather told him he saw Hacketts head as well as three others spiked and tarred on Arklow Barrack Wall.
