Matches at MaudlintownThe return inter-county football tournament matches between Wicklow and Wexford were played off at Maudlinrown, Wexford on Dec 4th 1887. The games were played under the auspices of the new Gaelic Athletic Association. From an early hour the streets were thronged with visitors, special trains from New Ross, Shillelagh, and Bray bringing large contingents. As each train arrived the passengers were received with enthusiastic cheers, and the Main Street was lined with a solid mass of people on their way to Maudlintown the scene of the contests. The number assembled on the grounds was stated to be in the neighbourhood of 25,000 and the order that prevailed was most exemplary.
Shortly before the game commenced the grand stand, a substantial structure swerved to side, and suddenly collapsed the occupants were all precipitated to the ground. Fortunately no fatal injuries resulted, but regret was felt that that(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
