- John McHugh (John Oiney) of Gubaveeney was the best flute player in this district. He played at all the dances and wedding. He was often out till daylight at a dance and could take his scythe and mow an Irish acre of meadow after- that was ten rucks a day, about five tons of hay. He laughed when he saw on the paper about a Donegal man who mowed four tons.
He could leave this district in the morning and could reach Co Meath early that evening. He used to stay with farmers for a week reaping corn, and the corn was alway reaped there with a "slash" hook. Then he would leave it and would start for home in the morning and was able to reap a stack of corn after, that evening.Michael McLoughlin
