- Gubaveeney school is the oldest school in the district. It is almost one hundred years since Master Leonard and Mrs Leonard taught school in it. Master Leonard was a hedge-school master who came and lodged with my great-grandfather, Michael Dolan, and taught school in his barn, for some time and what the children paid was one penny a day, and two turf each, to keep the fire. Most of them wrote with a burned stick and a quill penm, made from a hen's feather.After some time Master Leonard went to teach in this old building. He had a large family, and his pay was not able to support them, so himself and his wife and family went to America, and Master(continues on next page)
