- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Old Houses.The old houses in this district are thatched with straw or rushes. The walls are made of mud and the timber in the roofs made of bog-oak. The Thatch is usually oaten or wheaten - straw grown in the district.It is not usual to see a bed in the kitchen in this area although in a few houses there is what is known as a "Settle Bed". It is made of wood and shaped somewhat like a chest with a high back. The chest-like part can be opened and laid on the ground to form a bed, and can be closed in day-time and forms a seat.In some of the oldest houses there was no proper fireplace but a hole on the roof served as a chimney.
