- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)year 1879. The potato failed that year too, but it was not as bad as 1847. A potato called the "White Rocks" decayed in the ground, and another potato called the "Champion" was set.
- Mr James Cowan, who lived in Legaginney, Co. Cavan was a local poet. He died when he was over eighty years of age. He wrote under the name of Jones McCaw, some of the letters, he took of his real name to make it.
He wrote his poems in English. He won prizes for writing and sending rebuses to "Old Moore's Almanac". One time, Mr Eskins of Cootehill, Co. Cavan, put up a prize for the best poetry made about his boots, and Mr Cowan won it. He wrote one named,"My new house at home," and another named, "Tom the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
