In Aughaconney, Ballinagh, Co Cavan, at that time a man named Barney Smith lived in a mill. He was called "Barney the miller". When the famine came he had meal saved up, and he was asked to sell it, but he refused to do so. He made gruel every day, and gave it to the people. Some people, who had money paid him, but others, who had none, he did not ask any.
In Pat O'Connell's, Monneycass, Larah, Co Cavan, Government help was given to people. Four or five years ago the potato-crop in the North failed.
