- The old houses that were in this district in former times were thatched.
Some were thatched with rushes and other with straw.
All the old houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was called a teastard.
It was placed along the sidewall of the kitchen.
The fireplace was at the gable-wall except when two house were under the one roof, then the fire was in the centre wall between both kitchens. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. Some of the houses had no glass in the windows and instead they had boards on hinges that opened and shut like doors.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
