- The walls of the old houses were made of clay and were called "mud wall" All the houses were thatched and poor people thatched them with rushes. The couples were made of bog sticks. The old people had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed in a hole the shape of the side of the bed that sat into it, in the sidewall up from the floor. The chimneys were made of clay and wattles, but some houses had no chimney but a hole in the roof and a barrel in it to draw the smoke.
Some old houses had the fire on the floor in the centre of the house, because there would be plenty of place then for the ceilidhers telling stories(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
