- Many long years ago a river was running partly northwards through north Longford and found its course across the border into Co. Cavan. It ran convenient to where Arva town is now built. Its course can yet be traced from about quarter of a mile from the north part of the shores of Lough Gowna between the townlands of Enaughan and Rosduff. It also can be traced a few miles north-wards.
During the wars between the Ulstermen and the Connachtmen, on the eve of a great battle this river was reversed by an Ulster engineer named Dubh Maoin who got a dam built to stop the flow of the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
