43. S. Carthac had a church on Church Islan buit (approx) 595 A.D. Also called Mochuda * (See footnote) Remains still seen on the island on Lake Sheelin which gives it the name of "Church Island" orig "Inis Ucheain" No commemorations. This same saint built another Church at Kildrumferton - the primitive church of "Kill" (B.M. Smith Brady) The rock at back of school known as "Mass Rock" Story told of many people killed there in penal period. Stones scattered around and said to mark the graves of those who lost their lives on that occasion.
Mc Guines Downes now on the site was erected there in 1830. by a Fr. McGuire who held a controversey on the Roman Catholic Religion with a Protestant Cergyman
* This Carthagh was a native of Kerry and when a boy entered the monastery of his namesake and countryman St Carthach the Elder. in later years he built his own monastery at Rahan (Meath) After 40 years he was banished from Meath. he went to the Decres+ thus founded this famous school of Lismore in 635
