- Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers in the time of the landlords had to pay so much higher rate of rent than we have. Mr Thomas Smyth, whose address is, Aghawee, Kilnaleck, Co. Cavan told me the name of the local landlord and how he came to possess this land.
The landlords name was Hesbitt and he was one of Cromwell's soldiers, He was was very kind to his tenants and no evictions occurred while he was in the district. This is the story of how he came to be the landlord of this area.
Long ago their lived in this district a family of O' Reillys. When Cromwell was in this country he came to their and he lined up his troops in front of it. The he asked one of the girls of the family to pick a soldier for her husband, and that soldier would be the landlord of this district. She choose Hesbitt and he was made the landlord. His dwelling place was not in the land he owned but in the townland of Bruskey.
Dease O' Reilly was the landlord in the townland of Drumbrath long ago. The people always tried very hard to pay the rents promptly because if they didn't they would be evicted. He compelled his tenants to pay very high rents even as high as 12s per week. The landlord(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
