We have a large churn at home, it is made by Laide and company Leeds.
It is 1ft 9 ins wide at the top and the same at the bottom. There is no mark of any kind on the churn. My mother it is who usually churn. Long ago the people when they entered a house where old people lived and they churning they would be expected to help them churning, because if they would'nt, the fairies would take the butter.
If you went for the loan of an article to certain houses and they churning they wouldnt give it to you, and if you would get it, you would have to take the butter with it.
The old style dash churns have all disappeared with very few exceptions in this neighbourhood as people send their milk to the creamery, instead of churning and selling the butter. At my Grandfather's house there is an old machine churn for churning by hand which they used before the creameries. At Mr James Acheson's house there is an old machine churn to be worked by horses, the churns used with these machines were quite large were four feet (wide) long and two feet wide. Out Churn is a Barrel and over end churn and it is about twenty years old. In some neighbourhoods the people wont churn on May Day,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
