- The kinds of bread made in this district in olden times were made chiefly from oat-meal, potatoes and wheat. The oats and wheat and potatoes were raised on the farms, in sufficient quantities to supply the needs of the homes and to have sufficient to sell to raise money to pay the rent to the landlords. The work involved much more labour than it does to - day, for potatoes were put in with the spade then; now the crop is entirely planted with the plough. Then in many instances the ground for the oats and wheat crop was dug with the spade; now this is never done, the plough always does this preparation for the sowing. Then again the oats was not considered sufficiently covered if ridges with furrows were not made and the soil from the furrows shovelled over the ridges. No doubt there was better yield from the grain but, of course, the soil had not the advantage of the artificial fertilisers.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
