   One evening his step-mother sent James a journey of about three miles on a message. Snow was falling heavily as he was leaving home and the ground was hard with frost. Poor James had no boots and yet he cheerfully faced this journey in the midst of the snow-storm for he would venture his life to please his stepmother, cruel though she was to him.
   He continued on his journey till he reached an old 'forth' at the end of a long 'boreen.' There he suddenly stopped as if fastened to the ground and no wonder he did so for right in front of him and sitting under a 'lone' bush at the 'ring' of the 'forth' was the smallest man he had ever seen. The little man was engaged in making shoes and was surrounded by a bright light which seemed to come from nowhere. The leipreachaun for that was what it was looked up and said,
   "James Daly, I am surprised to see you out on such a wild night
