    say, that long ago a poor woman and her son lived near a well, where this lake is now formed. It is said, that one day this woman went to the well and left her son in the house. There was a large slab over this well to keep the water from flooding the land. When the woman reached the well, she removed the slab, and while filling her can with water, she heard her son screaming and off she ran, forgetting to put the slab over the well, but she did not reach her home, because the water in the well rose, and flooded the land, and formed Lough Sheelin.
