  1. The district was well populated during the famine but it is not well populated nowadays.
    There are many houses now in ruins which were used in the famine times. The potatoes decayed in the ground.
    After the famine the people got oats and potatoes from Scotland and Indian meal from England. People died in thousands.
    There was an old hospital on the Cavan and Dublin road. There are sheds built outside the hospital and they were filled with dead bodies.
    Iron vats were at Virginia, Ballyjamesduff, Knocktemple, Killenkere and at Mr. R. Jameson's Billis.
    Some of the people ate raw turnips and grass.
