the people often had only the light of the fire to read or work with. They had rush and reisin candles to show them light at night, and there were also tallow candles in the shops, but those were too dear for country people to buy. They used buy the reisin in Baileboro, and make some of the candles from it. Rush candles were made by peeling rushes, leaving only one little strip of skin to hold the rush together. Then it would be dipped in grease, and when it would be dry enough it would be put in a "sconse" or kind of a candlestick to burn.
