   The hoary hawthorn spreading wide with seats beneath its shade

   Is seen no more, nor house, nor home, nor green where oft I played;

   That house where oft the song of mirth has cheered the labouring swain,

   Seems now as silent as the tomb, and now no trace remains,

   The songster, too, my aged sire, has long since passed away

   And, lying down in yon cold grave, beneath the silent clay;

   Though silent long that tuneful voice in my ear seems warbling now,
