- Starch can be made from potatoes.
Wash and peel potatoes then grate them finely pour cold water on them and allow to settle. Strain the water off. When the water is allowed to settle it will make starch. - Long ago people used to make brooms.
They went to the mountains or bogs to gather heather. This heather which was very long was tied in bundles and used as "besoms", the shorter heather was tied on a handle firmly and made into a "besom" too. Short pieces of heather were used for scrubbing. - Long ago rush candles were made. People pulled the rushes and allowed them to season. Then they took off the green covering leaving a little green strip down each side to make candle strong. These were soaked in resin or fat.
