- The houses long ago were different to the houses of to-day. There were no two storey houses about the country. The fires were generally built in the gable of the house.
Before the fan bellows were in use the people used a hand-bellows which was very handy. The people had turf fires and every man had his share of turf in bog where they got the turf.
Many people burned fires out-side which they called ash-fires. They would build a heap of sods and set fire to them, and it would take a whole day for them to burn, and when they would be burned, the men would put the ashes on the crops to keep the frost from destroying them.
