“There lived a man named Cairthinín na Caoirn and he had half of West Clare to himself and there lived an other man named Fuaim na hAirce that had the other half.”
There lived a man named Cairthinín na Caoirn and he had half of West Clare to himself and there lived an other man named Fuaim na hAirce that had the other half. This Fuaim na hAirce was a giant and he would kill any one he would catch with a big horn he had grown out of his forehead. Cairthinín na Caoirn made up his mind that he would try and kill this giant. There was a trench separating the two halves from one another. This giant used to sleep in furze and the Cairthinín went while he was sleeping and he brought his sword with him and when he saw the giant first he turned away but he turned back again and gave him a little pick of his sword which awoke him. Then the giant ran after the Cairthinín and when the Cairthinín came to the trench he went over it clear but when the giant came to the trench he made a jump going to cross it but his horn got stuck in the opposite bank of the trench. Then the Cairthinín turned back and cut off his head and let him into the trench and then he had all Clare to himself.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
