were guarding the wine-cellar. He was brought before the court and sentenced to death. Just as the rope was being placed around his neck, the judge asked him had he any request to make before he would die. Jack said that he had a little cap in the wine-cellar and if he got that he would die happily. The cap was given to Jack and he placed it on his head saying “Capaillín fá mo thón-sa; Fly away cap”. Immediately a horse appeared and seated him on its back and in an instant he was back again at the fairy fort, away from judges and soldiers.
When he arrived at the fort, Jack returned to his own home again and brought his little cap with him. He went on many excursions after that with his little cap. One night he was very drunk and he began boasting about his little cap. Thinking it no harm he sold it, but if he did, the power was broken. The cap was of no use to the buyer and he gave it back to Jack, but it was of no use to him either so now he was his old self again.
