Marriage Customs
When a person is getting married it is an old custom to tie a shoe to the car, for luck. The married couple should wear "Something old and something new Something borrowed and something blue."
Another custom is to throw rice on the newly married pair. Anybody who was not married before Shrove Tuesday was chalked on the Sunday after called "Chalk Sunday." Saturday is an unlucky day to get married, Wednesday is lucky and the month of May is unlucky.
Money is usually given as a dowry but the poor people give stock and goods as a dowry. There used to be marriage in the houses about ninety years ago.
