The women even when over 70 had to work cutting scillans, plucking geese or they had to go into the houses of the fairly well to do and mind babies.
   Their houses were clean and neat and tidy. Vey often there was only one room with two beds at the end and perhaps a settlebed or press bed near the window. There was a little cabin at the gable on the outside for the ass and fowl. But the fowl and coop were always brought into the house for the Winter to keep them warm.
   Small farmers kept the calves in the kitchen until they were three or four weeks old. About 70 years ago a sick cow or heifer or even a sick horse was brought into the kitchen.
