About seventy or eighty years ago people had no doors on the houses and they banked up the entrance with whins and left a space to go in and out. When night would come they would fill the space with whins left there for the occasion. - Long ago the old houses were built with sods and were covered with scraith and rushes and the walls were mud walls. Most of the people had their houses thatched with rushes tied up in small long sheaves. The rushes were found growing in wet boggy places and the scraith was found in bogs.
