- The people of long ago ate only three meals a day, their breakfast, dinner and supper. The breakfast consisted of oat-meal porridge and buttermilk in Summer, and in winter when milk was scarce, they used sowans with it. The sowans were made from some oat-meal and seeds steeped in water for a few days.
The dinner consisted of cabbage, potatoes, bacon and they finished up with a piece of oaten bread.
The supper consisted of oat-meal porridge and a noggin of sowans.
The noggins were large wooden vessels and they held about two quarts. The people hadn't always porridge for their supper, some had potatoes with oaten meal. The oaten meal(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
