- Long ago they would make candles from resin. First they would put the resin in an old pot or "grisset" as it was called. Let it melt into a liquid. Then get a narrow strip of old calico or "tow" for a wick. Then pour the liquid out on a plate and roll the wick in it. Leave it till hard and it will burn brightly. "Tow" is made from flax. Long ago men would come to the houses to mend mugs and cups. They would put a band of tin around the vessel and then make the end of it into a handle. I saw a mug that was fixed in this way..
