- In olden days there were not many schools in the country.
Teachers were few and badly paid. The local children would gather to some old house and the teacher would come and give them lessons. The pupils in turn would take the teacher home and give him or her food and lodging. There are two spots in this district where hedge-schools were long ago, one in Monaghanoose about three miles west of Bailieboro, and the other in Tullawaltra about four miles west of Bailieboro. "Hedge-schools" was the name they were known by in those days. Poor children came from other parts of Ireland and went to these schools and each pupil took them home with them in turn and thus they got their education free. These children were called Poor Scholars.- Bailitheoir
