All the houses are slated now but in former times they were mostly thatched and it was very rare to see a slated house.
There are a great many people over 70, they do not speak Irish because it was not an Irish speaking district long ago.
There are very few old ruins of houses around the district but there are a great many old castles which were built by the Mc Namara in the sixteen century to protect themselves from the enemy. It was long ago custimary for the young girls and boys of the locality to emigrate to America and Australia. The land is rich and fertile and the crops that are raised in it are wheat, oats, cabbage, turnips and other vegetables. Years ago they grew flax.
The new canal which was made by the Germans to harness the waters of the Shannon pass near the village. Long ago there were a great many round in this locality but there is no trace of them.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
