- There are four graveyards in my parish one in Doonass. one in Truagh one in Clonlara and another in Cappavilla called Teampall. People are buried in these graveyards up to the present day.
Formerly there was a church in almost everyone of those hence they are called churchyards. Doonass has the remains of an old church known as Saint Senan’s where the bodies of two priests now rest inside the old walls.
There was a nice gravel path around the graveyards but now it has gone into grass and weeds, and is in a state of bad repair. It was customary for the funeral to go around this path to the grave where the priest read the prayers for the departed soul. The coffin was lowered into the fray by means of a rope, then the relations or neighbours begin to cover it by throwing the earth back over the coffin and lastly a blanket of green sward. In some cases where the dear departed one is a loss, it is a pathetic sight to witness a funeral ceremony.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
