- A Burning
Several burnings took place in the time of the Black and Tans. When a house would be put on fire by one of them, all the neighbours would gather and try and quench it. Some neighbours would try and pull out what was inside and others would bring water.
Very often the house was burned because all the old houses were thatched and once the thatch took fire there was no chance of stopping it. In very few cases houses were saved. The only chance of its escape was if there was an abundance of water near.
I remember to see a great fire once, its object being a cock of hay.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
