  1. When the Danes had invaded Ireland and were robbing and despoiling the Irish people the natives were forced to hide their valuables in caves and other places in order to keep them out of the hands of the Marauders.
    At Ballina there are caves wherein the harrassed Irish are said to have hidden a quantity of valuable articles of gold and silver etc. Later on smugglers took possession of the caves and they also are credited with having concealed treasure there. Patrick Sarsfield rested in these caves on his march
