- Long ago fairs were held near churches, near castles, and in country places not in the large towns and cities as they are held in recent years. In the parish of Scariff in the townland of Baile Glas there is a field where fairs were held in olden times.
The reason why fairs are held in towns and cities nowadays is because it is these places people congregate to do their business. There are special fields near the towns called fair greens in which the fairs are held. In some towns however there are no fair greens and on this account the fairs are held on the streets.
In some places fair tolls are collected that is a few pence has to be paid on every bunch of cattle sold(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
