Marriages in rural Ireland were always the source of great rejoicing and merriment to the young people.
In former times there was usually a special match-maker in each parish who selected suitable brides for eligible bachelors.
Shrove was then the recognised season for marriages. This old match-maker visited the houses and managed to find out the amount of money paid out for each girl.
Provided that the parties agreed and liked one another, the match was generally introduced on a fair day in some public-house.
Sometimes this was no easy job as it took considerable pressure and influence on the part of the old match-maker to split and divide the difference of fortune that existed between the two parties
Now that the fortune was agreed upon the next step was to visit the bachelor's residence " and walk the land" and see his stock,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
