They put a hole in the thatch for a chimney. Inside in the house they built a wall between the door and the window. This wall went straight across the floor and was beside the hole in the thatch. It was an earthen floor that was in the house.
- Some of houses long ago in Meelick were built of dóib buidhe, and others were made of mortar and stones. These houses were called mud-wall cabins. The houses were lined with spairteóg and thatched with reed or straw
The people used to get the spairteógs on the mountains and the reed in the wet land
In most of the houses long ago there was only one door and two windows. There was a kitchen and a room in every house. The fire used to be made on the hearth and the people used usually burn turf.
